When customers reach your shopping cart, you can further ensure your sales by adding something more enticing! A shopping cart promotional coupon or price rule is an awesome way to make sure your shoppers actually buy.
Magento offers many ways to create coupon codes and price rules to allure customers to buy without thinking twice. Here is how you can create coupons in Magento.
Log in to the Magento Admin and go to System -> Configuration -> Customer -> Promotions and create initial settings. These settings will be later on used to generate coupon codes. You can always change these later on while creating new Shopping Cart Price Rules. Here’s how:

Here’s how you create new shopping cart price rules. Consider an example where you can create new shopping cart price rules. Take an example where you wish to give a 10% discount to customers for your products in the month of December. Let’s say that the code is December10. Say you also have different promo rules for Catalog A and Catalog B. Promotion code for A could be December10a and For B would be December10b. The example also helps you track every catalog individually.
Go to Promotions -> Shopping Cart Price Rules -> Add New Rule
To use specific coupon, use Autogeneration:
Save configuration and continue to edit. Go to conditions and leave it blank to apply to all the products.
After that’s done, go to actions and now give the 10% of product price discount.
This step creates coupon codes. You can generate coupon codes by going to Manage Coupon Codes. There are a few basic settings to be configured for this like coupon code, coupon quality and code format. After you have entered the desired configurations, hit the generate button.
We now have generated 20 coupon codes. These can be exported to CSV and EXCEL or XML format. These can be used with catalog A and catalog B
Here’s how we can use one coupon code and apply to the shopping cart.
You can even generate a report by going to Reports -> Sales -> Coupons.
